After the village of Kampong Phluk, Hon tuk-tuk’d us over to the Rolous Group of temples which, like Kampong Phluk, lies around 15 km east of Siem Reap. The Roluos Group predates the “main” Khemer temples to the north of Siem Reap. Built by Jayavarman II and representing the first major capital (Hariharalaya) of the Ankorian-era Khemer Empire, these temples (Bakong, Preah Ko, and Lolei) are much older than the later-built northern Khmer temples. They are in worse condition because of their age but were still impressive. My favorite was Bakong.
